Occasional Pre-Show
My choice would have to be Gorilla Monsoon. That guy could sell anyone, he could describe a match better than anyone and he brought an edge of realism to the show.
Gorrilla and Ventura were the ultimate announce team.

Anybody think different? Throw your thoughts in...

If didn't like Monsoon for one reason. The guy was too Pro Hogan in his announcing. I get that he was the babyface announcer and was suppose to put over Hogan, but he always did it at the expense of the other wrestlers. That is the sign of a bad announcer.

Jesse Ventura was the best announcer ever, especially considering how important it was to keep wrestlings secrects back then. Listen to him at Wrestlemania III. You would swear if you didn't know any better that Hogan/Andre was a legit fight. Ventura put nearly every wrestler over with his announcing, the guy will never be topped.

I disagree. Gorilla WAS supposed to put over the faces and WAS pro Hogan but you need to remember this... In the 80's heels were heels. You were supposed to hate them. I think that Gorilla ehanced the heel persona of guys like Dibiase, Rude and Perfect and made you hate them even more.

Still, you cant deny JR. Often times he's more entertaining than the match itself. But he's more realistic because its a different day in age. I do realize that sometimes he oversells a match but hey, it adds drama. Still, Gorilla was the best for the 80's.

As far as color commentary goes, Jesse was the greatest color commentator, but Bobby Heenan had the quickest wit and was absolutely hillarious!!

I know he was suppose to put over faces, thats what I said. What I also said is that he did it at the expense of Hogan's rivals.

Watch when Undertaker beat Hogan for the title at Survivor Series. The correct thing for Gorilla to do after that match would to put over Taker but saying that Flair got invloved to keep Hogan strong. Instead he just repeated "It took three guys to beat Hogan" implying that Taker, despite looking stronger than Hogan in the match couldn't have won without Paul Bearer and Ric Flair. There are so many other examples like the 89 Rumble with Hogan and Savage, but Survivor Series is probably the best one.

Its fine to put faces over and point out that they got screwed, but Monsoon took away any momentum heels ever got against Hogan.

I would have to say by far Joey Styles. He was a one man announce team for many year's in ECW. It is difficult to call and sell a match the way he did without any help. He also was exceptional at calling all the wrestling holds used throughout the match. Of course, nowadays he is more watered down because of the WWE, but still you have to give credit where credit is due.

Jim Ross.

I've never been a fan of the extremes on different sides. For instance, I hate it when an announcer speaks in a low and gritty voice all the time (like TNA's guy, forget his name) and I hate it when they do the opposite and they have a sort of muffled high pitch voice (like Monsoon). I don't like it when they try too hard to be exciting (like Styles for the most part, where he'll go "OH my GOD look at that BOOOOODY slaam!!!") but I also hate, naturally, when they're boring (like they're forcing Styles to do now, where everything is real monotone in this "look at how serious this is, because I'm speaking like I'm at a funeral" kind of method). I can't stand Tazz screwing up and stuttering, lol....JBL I thought talked more about how he hated Cole as opposed to the matches themselves...

Vince, outside of having that high-pitched and muffled voice, was a great announcer because he wasn't 24/7 with that. When he was pissed, he got into the lower register of his voice and added some grit. Now of course, he's all grit when he talks, which must be killing his vocal chords lol.

However, JR is the perfect balance in my opinion. He calls the matches but makes quick comments about the wrestlers themselves. He gets excited and pumps up the crowd, but it isn't on every single move. He can be solemn, but he isn't monotone. Perhaps his best feature is that he roots for the faces, but acknowledges the skills of the heels as well in a way that a sort of unbiased guy would be. He would claim to be upset if Undertaker was screwed out of a title shot, but he'd also say that "you have to hand it to Edge, the ultimate opportunist, this is a brilliant move" and so forth. JR does the best job of rounded up the action, keeping the viewer's focus, informing us of the current point of the story's EKG so to speak, and throwing some emotion in there as well. It'll be a sad day when he's gone.

I went with Good Ole JR. JR brings a little bit of everything to the table. He can add drama to the match. He can make you hate the heel and support the face. He is a great story teller and he gives you the details that you need to know what is going on. But you can't rule out Gorilla, as no one could sell a face like he did. And The Body is the best color guy, as he gave you the details of the match, and made every match look decent.

Monsoon was awful. The guy was just a big old pile of shit. Only nostaligia makes people think he's good.

I'm going with JBL. Because he praised wrestlers even when he was putting them down. The guy did his best to put everybody over. He also didn't outstay his welcome like former quality announcers like J.R. & Lawler have.

Well, I can't really vote correctly because being at my age (19) and have just been into wrestling for five years, the only announcers I ever heard were JR, Michael Cole, Don West, Mike Tenay, and Joey STyles. From these guys, I would say JR and Joey Styles are the best, but JR tops JS.

I still remember one of JR's statements that made me laugh. It was an attack on Monday Nitro, during a match between Jeff Hardy and Johnny Nitro (as he then was)

"...Johnny 'don't call me Monday' Nitro..."

i grew up with jim ross as play by play for midsouth, and i have a special place in my heart for him and always will.
a truly unfortunate occasion is that gordon solie is not one of the choices, as he was better than most of your list.

but my #1 choice (anyone who knows me will be shocked) is none other than vince mcmahon. he balanced promoting the wrestlers and the promotion with allowing his announce partners time to speak better than nearly anyone. if he ran his company with the same sense of fairness and the same attention to the product, if he treated his workers and the industry with the same reverence he once displayed at the announce table, his shows would be incredible. vince the ceo could learn a lot from vince the play by play aannouncer.

I might get totally laughed at for this but my pick is Michael Cole.

I have only been watching wrestling for the last 7 years and that has mainly been WWE so I can't really comment on the older announcers. However, I don't get all the pro-JR crap. He makes too many references to things whilst calling a match, like he over does it. Also he makes a lot of mistakes. Lawler is just boring and hardly says anything at all. Tazz mumbles a lot of the time, whilst I haven't heard a lot of Joey Styles. JBL was brilliant and is missed, especially as he is out of shape in the ring. Cole is going to be the top pbp guy very soon and all of those JR groupies will have to lump it. Cole calls the match perfectly in the 'WWE storytelling mode' and lets the guys in the ring have their credit.

Wow...Jim Ross is running away with it. You can tell the age group that reads and posts in these forums. I"m sorry but good ol' JR couldn't hold a candle to Gorilla Monsoon. He was the best at calling matches and telling the story. He with either Bobby Heenan or Jesse Ventura made up the best announcing teams of all time.

I hope nobody says Mitchell Cole (thanks Y2J). He's the worst. If I hear the Undertaker is the best pure striker in the history of the business one more time........

See, as Hardcore mentioned, that's how it was supposed to be. Monsoon was for the good guy. He did that for all the faces and whoever he was announcing with, Ventura or Heenan, defended the bad guy. Ah, the good old days.

Yes, he is suppose to put the faces over, but he did it at the expense of the heel way too much. He made any heel look far weaker than they had to just because it was the only way he knew how to call it. Monsoon was a bad announcer, Ventura more than made up for it.

The age of voters on this thread must be a serious factor as stated earlier, because as great as J.R. is, he will always be second fiddle to Monsoon.

Firstly, now I think J.R's best days are past him, secondly, J.R. has undoubtedly been helped along the way by only having the likes of McMahon, Cole etc to compare to. I think that Schiavone was overlooked a lot of the time because he was sat with greats like Heenan and they were all evenly good. Maybe if Schiavone was sat with McMahon etc, people would look at him in the same light they do J.R.

Lets be honest here, its easy to look good if your competing against a bunch of mongs!
This brings me back to Monsoon. He sat with my pick as second best announcer ever, yet he still managed to be the one who dictated the show and stood out as the lead announcer.

1. Gino Moonson
2. Joey Styles
3. Jr

Nothin is better than watching the WWE as a little kid when Moonson was announcing. He was was so good, he grabbed you right into the show and made it seem so real. Him and Bobby will never be topped as the best duo.

Where is Joey Styles?
The VOICE OF ECW!
Joey Styles was the Greatest, with his "Oh my God!" and screaming "He's Dead!". His interviews were great with Tazz, Bill Alfonzo, Stevie Richards, etc. And he was so great at selling when the lights would go dark. When they teamed him up with Shane Douglas when Douglas was injured, we was on the top of his game. Plus, Styles didn't mind interacting with the fans if he needed to. Styles Hands Down!

Best Play by Play Ever:Memphis Legend Lance Russell, this guy would get you into ny mtch no matter how bad it could be, hell he could sell Hogan VS Gillberg like it was god vS The Devil.

Best Color:Bobby "The Brain" Heenen, just watch the WrestleMania 17 gimmick battle royal and you will see wy the guy is the best. He was qucik in thinking and didn't have to have all his stuff written down like Ventura and King.
