A CM Punk Question To Think About

At that link is the famous IWA-MS triple threat match between Rey Misterio Jr, Eddie Guerrero, and CM Punk. This was a fantastic match and Punk has stated that not only was that mtch one of his favorite matches, but that Eddie Guerrero was a mentor to him while Eddie was on the independents.

Looking at Punk's summer angle, this match, and Dave Lagana's commentary about how HBK put Punk over backstage during a creative meeting in 2007, it got me thinking:

If Eddie had lived to see Punk debut, would Eddie have put Punk over like HBK did and would Punk not have been buried as much like he said he was?

Any thoughts or commentary are welcome.

As much as I have a boat load of respect for the man Eddie Guerrero, I highly doubt he had the backstage pull to get the heat off of Punk that Punk had in the first place especially if HBK did go to bat for him.

Looking back on it now, if Eddie was still around what a fued it would have been for Eddie to face off against a Straight Edge Society version of Punk.

I think he would of gotten bigger faster. He was pretty over with the crowd when he first debut back in the wwe version of ecw. Eddie wouldve put him over and helped him grow faster.

I'm sure it always helps to have a friendly face in the business, especially a face so highly-regarded as Eddie Guerrero's. He had his demons, but he overcame them and rose up to be one of the most kind, respected men in the locker room. The thing was that HBK had an "in" with management, and had the position to walk up to somebody like Vince and say "give this kid a shot". I'm sure if Eddie thought he had talent he would have worked some angles with him and probably put him over in the ring - god what an awesome WWE match that would be! - but I'm not sure Eddie was the kind of guy that would walk into a creative meeting and say "stop burying Punk!"

Hard to say.

there is no doubt if Eddie was still around and stayed straight, he would have had the necessary pull to get PUNK over and involved in better storylines and gimmicks. Punk has the respect of the guys who had plenty of experience on the indy circuit, Guerrero respected the hell out of Punk when Eddie went back to basics after being let go by WWE in his druggy days

I'm sure he would of. He had a pretty good sense of wrestling tradition and the importance of putting over new stars. Being that he'd already worked with him and saw firsthand CM Punk's talent, it'd breast to convince me that he'd have gone to bat for Punk if he needed him to.

But did need him to? He reportedly had Mr Wrestlemania, one of the WWE's most memorable performers pulling for him. Not only that, but rumor has it that the MAGNANIMOUS Tommy Dreamer was also looking out for Punk.

Realistically speaking Eddie probably wouldnt have interfered. He wasnt the kind of guy who did the backstage politic stuff and according to certain people he was pretty much preoccupied with his career and health towards the end of his life. I think he would've been proud of the fact that Punk made it to where he is but then again Eddie is one of those old school Mexican wrestlers. He respects the 4th wall so to speak. Wrestling is like a religion in his culture so I dont know how fond of the Punk promo he would've been.

I think a lot of the old world travelers like Punk because he's a throwback. Jericho spoke highly of Daniel Bryan when he first came up.

They're a lot alike. They don't have the stereotypical huge muscles and they do a lot more catch-style wrestling than what's on TV. But they have charisma and a ridiculous work ethic.

Yes, I think, if presented with the opportunity, Guerrero would have backed Punk.
