I would have to go with Deer Hunter. It shows better than almost every movie out there how war affects people. Some movies show how it affects people at home, some show how it affects them in the war, some show how it affects them after the war. Deer Hunter does all of these and adds how people seems to evolve to enjoy the atmosphere. Sure the Russian Roulette scene was epic by all accounts, but you had to see what the scene represents. A soldier's evolution from being a nationalist armed force used to kill, to someone who is implanted in the area and adapts to it. Deer Hunter is a great film, and deserves to win.
