Winds-Of-Change
Occasional Pre-Show
10 Years ago this month, we were fresh off of WrestleMania XX, and WWE was preparing for Backlash. The WWE Brand Split was in massive effect. It was rare back then to see a RAW superstar appear on Smackdown, or a Smackdown Superstar appear on RAW.
On the RAW side, Chris Benoit had become the new World Heavyweight Champion, after defeating Triple H and Shawn Michaels in a classic in the Main Event of WrestleMania XX. He was due for his first title defense in a WrestleMania XX rematch.
On Smackdown, Eddie Guerrero was the reigning WWE Champion. He had just come off of a fued with Kurt Angle, and was now beginning a programme with the newly crowned JBL, who had ditched Farrooq and disbanding A.P.A.
John Cena, Randy Orton, Batista & Shelton Benjamin were all on the rise.
John Cena had picked up his first United States Championship. Randy Orton was the reigning Intercontinental Champion and fueding with Mick Foley, who were about to engage in a bloodbath at Backlash.
Batista was just about to find his nitch, but was doing good as Evolutions enforcer and Shelton Benjamin had beaten Triple H 3 seperate times on RAW, and seemed destined for the stars.
Each Brand's resident monster had left WWE the same night. Smackdown's Brock Lesnar, and RAW's Goldberg.
10 Years later, John Cena has Main Evented more WrestleMania's then anyone thought possible and is currently a 14 time WWE/World Champion.
Randy Orton is also one of WWE's biggest stars, having also won the WWE/World titles 11 times.
Batista has currently returned after a 4 year hiatus breaking into Hollywood, starring in The Man with the Iron Fist, Riddick and Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy. Shelton Benjamin never worked out and has been gone from WWE for awhile.
Eddie Guerrero and Chris Benoit are no longer with us, JBL & Shawn Michaels have retired. Kurt Angle, Triple H, The Undertaker and possibly Kane are nearing retirement. Bill Goldberg has not been seen in a WWE ring since, and Brock Lesnar has returned, ending The Undertaker's streak.
The WWE and World Heavyweight Championship have been unified, and your champion is someone who can draw comparisons to Benoit and Guerrero from the Underdog story, Daniel Bryan.
So say we have a flux capacator, and fast forward 10 years. We are fresh off WrestleMania 40.
Where do you see your favourite stars 10 years from now?
