The generation game....The Fourth Generation

Lee

Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No it's Supermod!
Whilst generation three brought gaming into homes, it was the fourth generation that rocketed it to the next level.

So generation three;

Sega Genesis/MegaDrive

Which do you feel has had the biggest effect?

The SNES brought us Star Fox and Mario Kart as well as expanding on the previous franchises.
The Genesis brought us Sonic as well as some classic RPGs such as Phantasy Star.

The SNES sold 49 million copies worldwide.
The MegaDrive sold 29 million.

Back in the day the MegaDive was my console of choice, probably because I had a lot of games for it, games such as Sonic, SHining force, Golden Ax, Aletered Beast...classic games that I just loved to play!

Recently, my mind has changed on this and I feel the SNES is the better of the two...Super Mario World, A link to the past, Mario Kart, Donkey Kong among some classic games. It was the SNES that also brought shoulder buttons to console gaming :)

I'm going to have to go with the Sega Genesis. Although the SNES had some all right games, I always thought that the Sega Genesis had the best games. In my opinion, the Sonic series and the Streets of Rage series beat anything that SNES put out, save for the Mega Man X series (I was never a fan of Street Fighter, and Mortal Kombat was available on both consoles). Furthermore, I was a huge fan of Sega CD, even if it was a huge flop...Night Trap FTW!!!

I'm going to go with the SNES. I found it more entertaining, and the games I found, were way more fun. While Sonic was a classic on that game, Mario Kart was also quality. Both systems were great, but the SNES was just way more fun in my opinion. It kept me more glued to my screen, and the array of games were just better. Plus, the controller was a beast. Preffered it by a mile.

This is the toughest choice so far... but I think I'll go for the SNES here simply because of how Nintendo used it. I think the games on both systems were equal in terms of quality. But it's one genius move that Ninty made that makes me choose the Snes over the Genesis.

In 1994, Sega were going on about how you need more power for better games and they were hyping their (at the time) ultra-powerful new console, the Saturn.
So Nintendo, as they always do, knew greater power didn't mean better games, but they decided to beat Sega at their own game.
They released Donkey Kong Country. A game that looked as good as anything that had been shown so far on the Saturn. The game sold like crazy, Nintendo were able to prolong the life of the SNES for another 2 years on that series and the Saturn flopped like my dog's ears.

Nintendo's sheer brilliance when using the SNES makes me choose it over the Genesis.

I loved Mario Kart but im gonna have to choose the Mega Drive based on the fact that on this console was Sonic,Sonic 2, Sonic 3 And Sonic And Knuckles which were the greatest games of that Generation. Mega Drive also has the Classic Shenobi, Streets of Rage and Golden Axe. The Snes gave us worse versions of Mario games (i think mario party was one it was about art not jumping on turtles heads so i didnt like it) but it did give us an evolution of Zelda They were both great Consoles but in my opinion the Mega drive was the better

When was the Sega C.D. released? Does anyone remember that? I recall only ONE game I enjoyed for it, it was a Wrestling game by W.W.F., I think called "Rage in the Cage". It had like 20 playable Superstars (about 10 more than the Royal Rumble game for Super NES) and it had actual video of each Superstar's finishing move.

Back On this thread topic, I'd have to say the Super NES. I was a huge Final Fantasy III fan, and that is the game that got me addicted to the franchise as a whole.

Meanwhile, the Super NES also had Donkey Kong, Mario Kart, a Casino game, Star Trek: The Next Generation, Batman & Robin, Desert Strike and this really awesome monster truck game, that I forget the title of, that you could create your own tracks in. (It's like Excite Bike, but with trucks)

EDIT: The game was called RPM Racing. :D I'm checking for this game in a local Super NES game shop and hopefully will be buying it, if they carry it. Great times had by all with this game.

As usual, the Nintendo offering wins. The games here were just better overall. Sega had several of the same games, but typically the Sega versions weren't as solid as the Nintendo versions. Many of the games here are absolute classics which have already been mentioned. So many great games that just were fun on many levels. Great memories make this one easy for me.
