The final eight

Lee

Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No it's Supermod!
Ok so we're now onto our final eight games. They are as follows;

(1) Ocarina of Time
(2) Golden Eye
(6) Super Mario 64
(7) Halo
(12) Metal Gear Solid
(14) Super Mario Bros
(20) Grand Theft Auto III
(121) Kingdom Hearts

What I am going to do with this thread is look in the games in a lot more depth, and also comment on their tourney run for the past four rounds. I'll do this as the night goes on, and I offer you to input your ideas and thoughts on each game.

I'm cheating by stealing this from my history thread

ZELDA_OCARINA_OF_TIME.jpg

The story

Ocarina of Time is set in Hyrule, a fictional kingdom and the setting of most Zelda games. Hyrule Field serves as a central hub connected to several outlying areas with diverse topography. Some of these areas are populated by one of the races of Hyrule: Hylians, Gorons, Zoras, Kokiri, and Gerudo.[10]

The game opens as the fairy Navi awakens Link from a nightmare, in which Link is seen on a stormy night as a man on horseback chases Princess Zelda, who is being escorted also on horseback by a woman. Navi brings Link to the guardian of his village, the Great Deku Tree, who is cursed and near death. Link breaks the curse, but cannot stop the tree from withering. The Deku Tree tells Link a "wicked man of the desert" has cursed him and seeks to conquer the land of Hyrule and that Link must stop him. Before dying, the Great Deku Tree gives Link the spiritual stone of the forest, the Kokiri's Emerald, and sends him to Hyrule to speak with the princess of destiny, Zelda.

My opinion

This game reeked of total awesomeness! The first game to get a perfect score from Famitsu, it usually comes out top as the Greatest game ever in polls (Half life 2 another, resident evil gets no where near this).

Giving Link a horse, going 3D, making it first person, HUGE HUGE HUUUUUGE game. Lots of items, lots of games, brilliant plot, magical game. I can not give it any justice...It rocks!

The overall seeding was number one gaining a massive 444 votes from the system I used.

It has beaten; Oregon Trail, Wind Waker, GTA IV and Resident Evil IV. Next round it takes on Kingdom Hearts.

Whilst I don't think we have our final cemented, I think this match up against Kingdom Hearts is pretty important. It's a hard run for all our competitors, but I think this match up may see one of our finalists.

Another one from my other posts...

#2 Goldeneye

Format; N64

Genre; FPS

Release date;
JP August 23, 1997
NA August 25, 1997
EU August 25, 1997
AUS August 25, 1997

Plot; See the film Goldeneye, that should help.

opinion

This is a game that usually gets forgotten in top 10s, yet it is a game that we have all played. It is a game that most people remember playing 4 player until 4am. It has a brilliant story mode, but a fantastically excellent multiplayer mode. Heck, even my sister liked it.

The overall seeding was number 2 and it gained a total of 407 points using my scheme.

It has beaten; Aladdin, FFVIII, The Sims and Starcraft. It seems to have taken out a big raange of games...how would it do against a FPS? How about we pit it against Halo? Damn rights we will.

Damn this game is going to destroy Halo, it deserves to go through...but will it win the next round?! A Goldeneye v SM64 matchup would be pretty damn fine!

DRUM ROLL PLEASE...LADIES AND GENTLEMEN...IT'S A ME A MARIO

Super_Mario_64_box_cover.jpg

The story

Ah wiki one again covers the plot nicely...

wiki said:
Super Mario 64 begins with a letter from Princess Peach inviting Mario to come to her castle for a cake she has baked for him. When he arrives, Mario hears a voice saying, "Welcome. No one's home. Now Scram! ...And don't come back!! Gwa! ha! ha!" At that time, Mario finds out that Bowser has invaded the castle and imprisoned the Princess and her servants within it using the power of 105 of the castle's 120 power stars. Many of the castle's paintings are portals to other realms, in which Bowser's minions keep watch over the stars.

Mario searches the castle for these portals to enter the worlds and recover the stars. He gains access to more rooms as he recovers more stars, and will have to tackle three obstacle courses leading to a battle with Bowser. Defeating Bowser the first two times earns Mario a key for opening another level of the castle, while the final battle releases Peach and rolls the credits. Peach rewards Mario by baking the cake that she had promised him. When the credits are done rolling, Mario says off screen, "Thank you so much for playing my game."

The history
The development of Super Mario 64 took less than two years, but producer/director Shigeru Miyamoto had conceived of a 3D Mario game over five years before, while working on Star Fox. Miyamoto developed most of the concepts during the era of the SNES and considered making it a SNES game (making use of the Super FX chip), but decided to develop it for the Nintendo 64 due to the earlier system's technical limitations

When announced along with the 64, people thought a 3D platformer wouldn't work, that an analogue stick would be stupid. Twelve years later and who's laughing now?!

My opinion

Can anyone say one of the most revolutionary games of all time? I can and just have.

Why? It brought Mario from 2D to 3D, brought in a free roaming camera, the game play was excellent, it was a huge game, so much to find and do while still keeping that Mario Magic.

And who tried to find Luigi? I did!

The overall seeding was 6 and gained a total of 291 points using my scheme.

It has beaten; Mortal Kombat, Ridge racer, Sonic the Hedgehog and Super Mario Bros 3. Next it takes on the might of the original Super Mario Bros in a match which I think will be a classic.

I think SM64 will go through here and will make for a very interesting semi final.

You are doing a fantastic job here Lee.

I am really looking forward to the Super Mario crunch match, it will truly be one for the ages, in my opinion. Kingdom Hearts vs OoT will be an absolute classic too and I am really looking forward to the nest round of matches. I am also looking forward to seeing Grand Theft Auto III in action once again.

Nice job man.

Halo: Combat evolved
Halobox.jpg

The main trilogy of games center on the experiences of the Master Chief, a cybernetically-enhanced human super-soldier, and his artificial intelligence (AI) companion, Cortana. The Master Chief aids future humanity in battling the Covenant, a theocratic alliance of alien races. In this science fiction setting, the term "Halo" refers to Halo megastructures: large, habitable ringed structures, similar to Larry Niven's ringworlds.

A good game of our time, probably one of the best on the X-Box but does it deserve the acclaim it's gotten? Not really...if you go back and play it it's far from special

Halo was seeded #7 and gained 288 points using my scheme.

It has beaten Diablo 2, Resident Evil 2, Shenmue and Final Fantasy VII. It goes up against Goldeneye 007 and I think this is the end of the run for Halo Combat evolved.

Metal gear Solid

Opinion

For the third official game in the series I fricking loved it, MGS is a classis to this day with many aspects that I'll save for the matchups!

Metal Gear Solid was seeded #12 and gained a total of 256 points using my scheme.

It has beaten tales of symphonia, Final Fantasy II(IV), Half Life 2 and Super Mario World. Next up is GTA III and whilst I want this game to win its next round I think it's too early to call a winner.

Super Mario Bros
Super_Mario_Bros_box.jpg

The story

Two plumber brothers have to save the princess from the evil King Koopa. Ah yes...the plot is finally there!

The history

In 1983 the Famicom was released in Japan and really lacked a title that was well...Super. Cue Miyamato and his task to make a groundbreaking new release for the North American release of the Famicom which was repackaged as the NES. Japan and the US got in 1985, the UK got it in 1987.

My opinion

Some people believe that Super Mario bros. is the greatest game of all time. I personally wouldn't agree with that but you can guarantee that there are not many people who have not played Super Mario Bros. It was the first computer game I ever remember seeing (Super Mario Bros. 3 would be the first I owned) and I'm going to agree with what the Nintendo Magazine says here and that they believe that this game single handily rescued the video games industry. It was so simple and had a great blend of difficulties my only gripe was the warps, only recently I did every level in that game because of the cheats but hey!

Overall it recieved a seeding 14 with a total of 245 points using my scheme.

Thus far it has beaten Shadow of the collosus, Burnout 3, Deus Ex and GOW. Next round it has Super Mario 64 and unfortunately I think this is the game where we realise is princess IS in another castle.

Grand Theft Auto III

256px-GTA3boxcover.jpg

Plot; Something about the mafia cars and ****es

History

NA October 22, 2001
PAL October 26, 2001

Opinion

I'm not a fan of the GTA series, but you'd be stupid to say this is a bad game, it isn't but it's not as good as made out to be!

The game was seeded 20 gaining 177 points using my scheme.

It has beaten Okami, C&CRA2, Pokemon Red & Blue and Super Smash Bros melee. This round it is up against MGS and whilst it's going to be very close, I personally will be voting against it.

Kingdom Hearts

256px-Kingdom_Hearts.jpg

Format; Playstation 2

Genre; Action RPG

Release date; November 15, 2002 (UK)

Plot;Something about a lad on an island, Donald Duck & Goofy and lots of Disney characters.

Opinion
Imagine a world where the heroes of Disney collided with some guys from Final Fantasy, but you make it a complete unique game...

That was me sold, and it was the reason I bought my PS2, just for this game. If you buy a console for a game, it deserves to be rated highly methinks. The gameplay is smoothly brilliant, the plot is fantastic, and I just love going to all the Disney worlds and feeling like a kid again.

Ok here we go...Kingdom Hearts actually drew seed number 180 using my scheme and only a meagre 22 points. Well how is it it made the final eight games? It was one of my personal wild card picks and it's gone quite damn far. It has beaten street fighter II, Tecmo, Mario Kart Wii and Oblivion and now faces off agains OoT. That should be a damn fine matchup.

So that's my summary of the top eight...what do you think of the games? Which game do you want to win? Which game do you think will win? Why?

It has beaten

I have to disagree with your opinions on Halo. I don't know if it will beat Goldeneye, and my vote is still on the fence, but Halo really is an incredible game. If Goldeneye is the game that makes you stay up until 4 am playing then Halo is the one that makes you not sleep for a week. Halo is just as much a classic as Goldeneye these days. You said, Lee, that Halo is a game that's not very great if you go back and play it, but I play it quite a bit with my friends and still find it awesome. Halo has a great chance.

Super Mario 64 vs. Super Mario Bros... I have to give this one to SM64, even though I've never loved either game very much. Super Mario Bros., while being a classic, really isn't THAT great. It may be because I've never got past the second level without using the warp area to go to World 5, but it never really interested me that much. SM64 is kind of the same. It's mostly so popular because it's a classic, but I don't think it's as great as people make it out to be. Regardless it beats the original Mario here.

Metal Gear Solid vs. GTA is a toss up for me. I'll probably go for GTA since I enjoy that series as a whole more than MGS.

Ocarina of Time vs. Kingdom Hearts has to go to Zelda, despite KH being a very fun game. It's just that this is OCARINA OF TIME. This game revolutionized gaming, and while Kingdom Hearts had some originality it just followed the path of many other games.

That gives us a final of Ocarina of Time, Grand Theft Auto 3, Super Mario 64 and, I guess I'll go with Goldeneye. If it works that way we could be looking at an amazing final of Goldeneye vs. Ocarina of Time. That may not be very surprising but it will be great no matter what. The game that started FPS against the game that started RPG. Perfect.

If only Super Smash Bros. had made it through. That, Ocarina of Time, Goldeneye and Super Mario 64 would make the greatest Team Nintendo ever.
