In my honest opinion, Casino Royale was the best movie in years. Certainly it was the best blockbuster in years. I remember being fucking high walking out of the cinema seeing it. It's most likely the best movie I've ever seen in a cinema.
It won't get reviews nearly as favourable, but I think the sequel could be a contender to The Dark Knight's crown of movie of the year. At least, I have a sneaking suspicion I'll prefer it. I already think that Casino Royale was the better franchise reboot, facing off against Begins. But this isn't about Batman, this is about Quantam Of Solace:

But let me take you back, just for the time being. Looking back, the trailers didn't depict a thinking man's action movie - it depicted a new Bond with the same formula. Thankfully, it delivered something altogether different. I mean, what was your favourite bit of Die Another Day? The bit where he drove a rocket car off a cliff, jumped out of it, tore off the boot, stole the parachute from the back of it and sailed away over the ice bergs, the giant space laser hot on his heels, perhaps? Of course, most people will tell you that wasn't the tense part. No, it was whether he'd be able to find where he'd parked his invisible car in time to save Halle Berre from the melting ice palace (being melted by the giant space laser, of course). Then there was the fantastic villain. You know, the Korean with the body transplant. Oh yeah, Madonna was also in it.
So yes. THANKFULLY, Casino Royale delivered something new. Some people say it ripped Bourne off. I agree. I also say it did Bourne ten times better than Bourne ever did.
Now, finally, let's look forward. Quantam Of Solace is being billed as a thinking man's action film. Picking up mere moments after the first one left off - the complete Bond theme layed over Bond shooting Mr. White in the leg and admitting he's "Bond. James Bond" - I'm a little worried that this won't be more of the same. With more of Felix Leighter (sp?), some awesome stunts and the promise of an interrogation scene (more ball-slapping, perhaps?), I'm quietly optimistic.
You're not going to get me with this one, saying it'll transcend it's genre. I'll just settle for it being the best of its genre this time.
