Best Match at Each WrestleMania

Ruthless-RKO

F*ck Friends, Rather die wiv ma AK!
I have been watching some random WrestleMania PPV's from the 90's, So with WrestleMania starting to come into view, it bares asking - What's everybody's match of the night for each year?

There are a few I can't really answer for, since I either haven't seen the shows or it's been awhile, but here are mine offhand...

3: Randy Savage vs. Ricky Steamboat
5: Hulk Hogan vs. Randy Savage
6: Hulk Hogan vs. The Ultimate Warrior
7: Randy Savage vs. Ultimate Warrior
8: Bret Hart vs. Roddy Piper
9: Shawn Michaels vs. Tatanka
10: Owen Hart vs. Bret Hart
11: Shawn Michaels vs. Diesel
12: Undertaker vs. Diesel
13: Steve Austin vs. Bret Hart
14: Undertaker vs. Kane
15: Steve Austin vs. The Rock
16: The Dudley Boyz vs. The Hardy Boyz vs. Edge & Christian
17: Steve Austin vs. The Rock
18: Undertaker vs. Ric Flair
19: Steve Austin vs. The Rock
20: Chris Benoit vs. Shawn Michaels vs. Triple H
21: Shawn Michaels vs. Kurt Angle
22: Shawn Michaels vs. Vince McMahon
23: Shawn Michaels vs. John Cena
24: Undertaker vs. Edge
25: Undertaker vs. Shawn Michaels
26: Undertaker vs. Shawn Michaels
27: Undertaker vs. Triple H
28: Undertaker vs. Triple H

11 and 15 were hard answers because both of those shows sucked, 16 I was split between the ladder match and the main event but decided to go with the one that didn't have a stupid, anticlimactic ending, and 17 really probably depends on my mood seeing as I love almost every match on the show. Then there's 18, where I don't really think Taker vs. Flair is that great, though it's certainly solid.

Also, damn does it get a little sad seeing that from Mania 23 on I didn't even have to check the card to know to give it to Taker every year. Though other than the Taker vs. Michaels rematch they're all classics - that one was pretty good, but it was mostly just a terrible show so it doesn't really have any competition.

9: Shawn Michaels vs. Tatanka
10: Owen Hart vs. Bret Hart
11: Shawn Michaels vs. Diesel
12: Shawn Michaels vs. Bret Hart
13: Steve Austin vs. Bret Hart
14: TAKA Michinoku vs. Agula
16: Benoit vs. Angle vs. Jericho
17: William Regal vs. Chris Jericho
18: Rob Van Dam vs. William Regal
19: Benoit/Rhyno vs. Guerreros vs. WGTT
20: Chris Benoit vs. Shawn Michaels vs. Triple H
21: Money in the Bank
22: John Cena vs. HHH
23: Shawn Michaels vs. John Cena
24: Ric Flair vs. Shawn Michaels
25: Undertaker vs. Shawn Michaels
26: Undertaker vs. Shawn Michaels
27: Undertaker vs. Triple H
28: Undertaker vs. Triple H

It really depends on what criteria you want to determine "best" with. I have more-or-less gone with my personal favourites here.

I share quite a few favourites with the O.P. I didn't comment on WrestleMania 15 because it's the only WrestleMania that I haven't seen within the last five years - all the others are relatively fresh to me.

WrestleMania XIX is my favourite WrestleMania and favourite PPV of all time. It also features what I consider the best Womens match I can remember in WWE, so that one changes all the time for me. Every match on that card (except for the Miller Lite Girls pillowfight) was great.

WrestleMania X-7 is a toss-up also between Benoit/Angle, Rock/Austin and Regal/Jericho. It's an odd pick, but Regal/Jericho is my favourite overall. However Benoit/Angle is the best actual wrestling match in WrestleMania history. It kind of depends on which criteria you're voting for. So I'm weighing up personal favourites plus great working.

I've said this before, but Benoit/Angle at X-7 is the greatest wrestling match in WrestleMania history. Rock/Hogan at X8 is the greatest in terms of atmosphere. HBK/Undertaker at 25 is a great middle-ground between the two. But my personal favourite WrestleMania match is Ric Flair vs. Shawn Michaels from WM 24.

I wonder how much heat you'll get for having The Undertaker vs. Diesel at WM12 instead of the Iron Man Match. Although it's pretty well regarded now, I remember at the time it received a lot of negative reviews and if you watch carefully you'll see thousands of fans left the arena before it finished. I'd pretty much go with this list but with a few changes:

10) Shawn Michaels vs. Razor Ramon
14) Cactus Jack & Chainsaw Charlie (Terry Funk) vs. New Age Outlaws
18) The Rock vs. Hulk Hogan (Just for the atmosphere, WM18 is one of my least favourite 'Manias)
19) Shawn Michaels vs. Chris Jericho (How could you not?)
22) Edge vs. Mick Foley
23) Batista vs. The Undertaker ( I honestly don't think this would have been as good as it was it hadn't gone on 4th. Batista had been performing poorly since he returned from injury and his PPV matches leading into this had sucked. Batista wanted to go on last but was told by Pat Patterson that he didn't really want to follow HBK. It seemed to light a fire under him and they went out there and blew the roof off. Batista says on his DVD he annoyed people when he got backstage as he shouted "Follow that!" at the locker room)

Overall my favourite 'Manias are X-7, WM24, XIX, XIV & X

Great topic. I guess with Wrestlemania season coming I can't help but to be a little stoked.

7. Ultimate Warrior vs Randy Savage. Career Match
8. Bret Hart vs Roddy Piper for the I.C Title
9. Shawn Michaels vs Tatanka for the I.C title. (despite the crap ending)
10. That's a hard one. Either Bret Hart vs Owen, or the ladder match.
11. Shawn Michaels vs Diesel for the WWF title
12. Shawn Michaels vs Bret Hart for the WWF Title Iron Man Match.
13. Bret Hart vs Stone Cold in the submission match.
14. That's a hard one but I would have to go with Undertake vs Kane.
15. Stone Cold vs the Rock
16. TLC for the Tag titles
17. Undertaker vs Triple H
18. The Rock vs Hollywood Hulk Hogan
19. Chris Jericho vs Shawn Michaels.

My prediction (actually more like a dream) for 29 would be CM Punk vs the Streak.

23) Shawn Michaels vs. John Cena
24) Shawn Michaels vs. Ric Flair
25) Undertaker vs. Shawn Michaels
26) Undertaker vs. Shawn Michaels
28) Undertaker vs. HHH

It would be hard to pick my favorite WrestleMania, but if I had to pick one, it would be WrestleMania 17. Top to bottom, everything worked. For an older fan like me, seeing all the guys in the gimmick battle royal brought bak memories. Some of the people I was watching the show with had no idea who some of these guys were.

As for the Miller Lite catfight girls at WrestleMania 19, Lance Storm said in his blog that his match (one of the tag team title matches) got bounced off the card onto Heat because of them.

Wrestlemania 3 - Randy Savage v Ricky Steamboat
Wrestlemania 7 - Randy Savage v Ultimate Warrior
Wrestlemania 8 - Randy Savage v Ric Flair
Wrestlemania 9 - Shawn Michaels v Tatanka (but this is the worst 'mania i have ever seen, absolutely terrible)
Wrestlemania 12 -Shawn Michaels v Bret Hart (Thought i still think the match is overrated)
Wrestlemania 13 - Stone Cold Steve Austin v Bret Hart
Wrestlemania 14 - Stone Cold Steve Austin v Shawn Michaels (not a great mania imo)
Wrestlemania 15 - Stone Cold Steve Austin v The Rock
Wrestlemania 16 - Dudleys v Edge & Christian v Hardys
Wrestlemania 17 Stone Cold Steve Austin v The Rock (though TLCII was awesome, this was the best mania)
Wrestlemania 18 - The Rock v Hulk Hogan
Wrestlemania 19 - Shawn Michaels v Chris Jericho
Wrestlemania 20 - Shawn Michaels v Triple H v Chris Benoit
Wrestlemania 21 - Shawn Michaels v Kurt Angle (imo best match the WWE have ever put on)
Wrestlemania 22 - Mick Foley v Edge

Wrestlemania 24 - The Undertaker v Edge
Wrestlemania 25 - The Undertaker v Shawn Michaels
Wrestlemania 26 - The Undertaker v Shawn Michaels
Wrestlemania 27 - The Undertaker v Triple H

Here is my list of favorite matches from the Grandest Stage of them All. Most of these are the final match of the night, for the WWF Championship. For those that are not, I gave a short explanation why I picked them.

WM – Hulk Hogan and Mr. T (w/ Jimmy Snuka) vs. Rowdy Roddy Piper and Mr. Wonderful, Paul Orndorff (w/Cowboy Bob Orton) with Special Guest Referees Muhammad Ali and Pat Patterson
The final match of the night, featuring the WWF Champion, the number one Heel and Mr. T.!!

2 – Hulk Hogan (c) vs. King Kong Bundy (w/ Bobby The Brain Heenan) in a Steel Cage match for the WWF Championship
The final match of the night, for the WWF Championship, inside a Steel Cage!!

III – Hulk Hogan (c) vs. André The Giant (w/ Bobby The Brain Heenan) for the WWF Championship
The final match of the night, for the WWF Championship. The first time the Champ was the “Underdog”, sort of.

IV – Macho Man, Randy Savage (w/ Miss Elizabeth and Hulk Hogan) vs. The Million Dollar Man, Ted DiBiase (w/ Virgil and André The Giant) in a tournament final for the vacant WWF Championship
The final tournament match of the night, for the WWF Championship.

V – Macho Man, Randy Savage (c) vs. Hulk Hogan for the WWF Championship
The final match of the night, for the WWF Championship and Miss Elizabeth!!

VI – Hulk Hogan vs. The Ultimate Warrior for the WWF and Intercontinental Championships
The final match of the night, for the Undisputed WWF / Intercontinental Championship.

VII – Sgt. Slaughter (c) (w/ General Adnan) vs. Hulk Hogan for the WWF Championship
The final match of the night, for the WWF Championship and the U. S. A.!!

VIII – The Nature Boy, Ric Flair (c) (w/ Mr. Perfect) vs. Macho Man, Randy Savage (w/ Miss Elizabeth) for the WWF Championship
It wasn’t the final match of the night, but it was for the WWF Championship. I understand that Hulk Hogan was the bigger Star, but I’d rather see a Main Event match between # 2 and # 3 (you decide who’s who) for the richest prize, instead of # 1 and # 4 (at the that very moment), for pride.

IX – Bret The Hitman Hart (c) vs. Yokozuna (w/ Mr. Fuji) for the WWF Championship
The final scheduled match of the night, for the WWF Championship. I just won’t get into what happens after.

X – Yokozuna (w/ Mr. Fuji and Jim Cornette) / Lex Luger (c) vs. Bret The Hitman Hart for the WWF Championship with Special Guest Referee Rowdy Roddy Piper
The final match of the night, for the WWF Championship. I always thought Owen Hart should have faced Yokozuna for the WWF Championship. I would have been okay with Lex Luger going 2 for 2 that night. This should have been the first WrestleMania WWF Championship Triple Threat match. This could have been the first WrestleMania WWF Championship Fatal Four Way match, if Owen Hart was included.

XI – Diesel (c) (w/ Pamela Anderson) vs. Shawn Michaels (w/ Sid and Jenny McCarthy) for the WWF Championship
It wasn’t the final match of the night, but it was for the WWF Championship. Lawrence Taylor and Bam Bam Bigelow did their thing, but I don’t think it should have ended the show. Pamela Anderson and Jenny McCarthy should have ended the show. Wait, didn’t Shawn Michaels win the services of Ms. Anderson at the Royal Rumble??

XII – Bret The Hitman Hart (c) vs. Shawn Michaels (w/ Jose Lothario) in a 60 Minute Iron Man Match for the WWF Championship
The final match of the night, for the WWF Championship with Overtime.

13 – Sycho Sid (c) vs. The Undertaker in a No disqualification match for the WWF Championship
The final match of the night, for the WWF Championship. The first WM Main Event spot for the Streak.

XIV – Shawn Michaels (c) (w/ Triple H and Chyna) vs. Stone Cold Steve Austin for the WWF Championship with Special Outside Enforcer Mike Tyson
The final match of the night, for the WWF Championship. Plus having Iron Mike Tyson adds to the hype. I wish he had a match instead. Tyson is one half of my Unified WWE World Tag Team Champions in my WWE 13 Universe.

XV – The Rock (c) vs. Stone Cold Steve Austin in a No Disqualification Match for the WWF Championship
The final match of the night, for the WWF Championship. The first WrestleMania Main Event match between my second favorite Star of all time vs. my other second favorite Star of all time.

2000 – Triple H (c) (w/ Stepahnie McMahon - Helmsley) vs. The Rock (w/ Vince McMahon) vs. Big Show (w/ Shane McMahon) vs. Mick Foley (w/ Linda McMahon) in a Fatal 4 Way Elimination Match for the WWF Championship
The final match of the night, for the WWF Championship. I am one of the very few who feel it was “best for business” to involve the McMahons in the match.

X-Seven – The Rock (c) vs. Steve Austin in a No Disqualification match for the WWF Championship
The final match of the night, for the WWF Championship. Number 2 vs. Number 2…Round 2!!

X8 – Chris Jericho (c) (w/ Stephanie McMahon) vs. Triple H for the Undisputed Championship
The final match of the night, for the Undisputed WWF / WCW World Heavyweight Championship. Yes The Rock and Hulk Hogan stole the show, but they stole it, because it wasn’t theirs to begin with, sort of. Anyway, I agree with McMahon’s decision to give the most importance to the WWF Championship AND WCW Championship.

XIX – Kurt Angle (c) vs. Brock Lesnar for the WWE Championship
The final match of the night, for the WWE Championship. Ric + Hunter + Booker + Big Gold Belt = Main Event in any other PPV, including Starrcade and Bound For Glory, but I respect what Vince did here. It would have been too easy for the Nature Boy and the Game to get the last spot on the card with the former 5 X WCW Champion for the World Heavyweight Title, but they knew what they were doing back then. They knew it was only fitting that two “Wrestlers” Main Evented the “Greatest” WrestleMania in History. Lesnar is one half of my Unified WWE World Tag Team Champions in my WWE 13 Universe.

XX – Triple H (c) vs. Chris Benoit vs. Shawn Michaels for the World Heavyweight Championship
This is the first match I picked where the WWF Champion or the WWF Championship isn’t involved in the match. Still, it is the final match of the night, but for the World Heavyweight Championship. I’m not taking anything away from the great match between Eddie and Kurt, but to me, this was the first sign that the WWE Championship and the World Championship were equal. Plus the chance to see Angle win # 5 wasn’t as appealing at the time than seeing DX Explode on the Grandest Stage and Benoit win his first World Title.

21 – Triple H (c) (w/ Ric Flair) vs. Batista for the World Heavyweight Championship
This is the second match I picked where the WWF Champion or the WWF Championship isn’t involved in the match. Still, it is the final match of the night, but for the World Heavyweight Championship.

22 – John Cena (c) vs. Triple H for the WWE Championship
The final match of the night, for the WWE Championship. Finally, after 2 years of being the new Intercontinental Title, the WWE Title takes it’s “rightful” place on the card.

23 – John Cena (c) vs. Shawn Michaels for the WWE Championship
The final match of the night, for the WWE Championship. I actually loved this idea better than the rumored Main Event, Cena / HHH II The Rematch.

XXIV – Edge (c) (w/ Vickie Guerrero, Curt Hawkins and Zack Ryder) vs. The Undertaker for the World Heavyweight Championship
This is the third match I picked where the WWF Champion or the WWF Championship isn’t involved in the match. Still, it is the final match of the night, but for the World Heavyweight Championship. Streak vs. Title (and Streak…sort of). It has a nice touch to it.

XXV – Triple H (c) vs. Randy Orton for the WWE Championship
The final match of the night, for the WWE Championship. This felt like what WM 21 should have felt like.

XXVI – The Undertaker vs. Shawn Michaels in a Streak vs. Career Match
This is the first match I picked where it was not about the WWF Championship, and not about the World Championship. Streak vs. Career and to this day, still holds to be as true as it gets in Professional Sports Wrestling Entertainment.

XXVII – The Miz (c) (w/ Alex Riley) vs. John Cena for the WWE Championship
The final match of the night, for the WWE Championship. I always wondered if the Anonymous Raw GM was going to make it a Triple Threat match and insert the Rock…but the Rock didn’t feel like it or something.

XXVIII – The Rock vs. John Cena
This is the second match I picked where it was not about the WWF Championship, and not about the World Championship. It was about one of my all-time favorites (tied for second favorite with Stone Cold Steve Austin) vs. my Son’s favorite. We can see Cena smelling what the Rock was cooking!!
