Green Day takes this with no problems. Again, I'm not a fan, but Green Day seems to reinvent themselves with each album. They really play up the pop-punk style and have a tremendous amount of mainstream appeal; and in recent years they have really won over the critics.

Green Day have this one for me. I'm not their biggest fan in the world, but there is no denying the fact that they have the ability to constantly change their sound and still don't lose their support, which to me is a sign that their music is good enough to keep people interested and showcases their talent

Silverchair is a band that, with a bit more staying power and a less spotty history, should have been able to challenge here. But they've been far too inconsistent. As great an album as Frogstomp was, and as cool a song as "Anthem for the Year 2000" was, the key word here is consistency, as in, they've had none.

Green Day, on the other hand, is very consistent. RVDGurl hit the hail SQUARE on the head with the word "reinvent." Green Day is punk rock's version of Madonna. They never go away completely, and they always seem to come back and hit the music scene hard with a new sounds, a new topic, or a new look. Billy Joe and co. should challenge for the Regional Final 4, and may even be a dark horse to win the region outright.

I'm a huge Green Day fan. More of there older stuff than their newer stuff. But as RVDgurl said they were able to reinvent themselves to keep up with the times. Silverchair never really did it for me. They had a few ok songs but were really never anything great. Green Day takes my vote by a mile.

Thats what every Green Day fan says, it's a wonder American Idiot outsold Dookie considering no-one likes it... or maybe it's just that people dont like to admit it was a great album?

Green Day by a country Mile here on this one. Pretty much what everyone has said is bang on, absolutely bang on, each album is different and just when you think it's time for them to step aside they manage to come around with another catchy Pop-Punk album and effectively rule the world again.

Jonny makes a good point, but there's more to this. American Idiot ABSOLUTELY outsold Dookie, but the people who bought Dookie and liked it more were the punk rock early adaptation fans. Those same fans bought A.I. but liked Dookie more, whereas more fringe fans and pop fans bought A.I., because is was less punk and more alt rock.

Green Day will be a tremendous force in this tournament, and as good as Silverchair was, they cannot get past this juggernaut.

There is no doubt that what you touched on is completely correct, American Idiot did appeal more to the mainstream people, whether that was because of the sound of because of the political nature of some of the songs on the album is up for debate really. At a time when the whole world hates George Bush (well a lot of the world) an album that has distinctively anti-bush lyrics is going to sell like hot cakes especially when you have a mainstream band like Green Day releasing it. I just dont like the fact that most of the people voting for Green Day are like "I loved Dookie, but AI was shit" they have more than two albums for starters and if some people could look past their Elitest goggles they might actually realise that American Idiot was a great album.

Absolutely! A lot of "old school" Green Day fans I speak to, my fiancee cheif among them, actually rate 1,039 Smoothed Out Slappy Hours as their best work, and even more so because it was a compilation of prior, lesser known work.

Jonny's other point, which I am glad somebody made, was the fact that AI's music was so culturally relevant. A major reason I feel the punk scene got stale in the mid-90's was because there was very little to be really punked about. It became more of an image and less of a statement. Green Day took up the charge in the recent years with ALL of AI - from the poingant "Wake Me Up When September Ends" to "Blvd of Broken Dreams." And if you need more proof, check out the tag-team job Green Day did with
U2 on "The Saints Are Coming." Green Day is top to bottom among very few timeless bands still going strong today.

Green Day were great. Perhaps I'm the stereotypical fan here that Jonny and IC were just talking about, but yes I'm going to say it: American Idiot was shit. Really, really, really, REALLY shit. Every few monthes or so I get duped in to downloading or listening to the album after reading another music critic rave about it, and every single time I am left disgusted.

The punk-pop songs on the album are almost carbon-copies of earlier hits, and the new style they attempt at just comes off as bland in my opinion. Add the whole "concept" album into it and it just doesn't do it for me. Concept albums are almost always utter crap, with a few golden exceptions (like Tommy or Sgt. Pepper's).

Personally I preferred where Green Day was going when they were trying to fool everyone that they weren't The Network. There was some good songs on their one album. And it's so clearly Green Day that it's humorous when they deny it.

Green Day were great though, up to around Warning in my book. From there they just became far too bland and pop-oriented for my tastes, and I love pop music.

But I voted for Silverchair. Why? Because no one else will. And they deserve atleast one vote. Frogstomp was an amazing album from top to bottom, and Freak Show was very underrated and just as good as Frogstomp was. Still, GD will win this.

They're the only 2 albums I like from the completely overrated band that is Greenday. And they aren't amazingly good either. I think the thing is, American Idiot seemed to be promoted more and rock music is definately moving up a notch or 2 since when Dookie was released. Many people bought American Idiot because of the song of that name, then bought Dookie along with others to see if all the albums were that good.

However now, with the annoying people going around saying you can't like American Idiot, or any other 'commercialised' or 'generic' band, people won't admit to liking it. People need to get over the fact people have different tastes in music, and let them like what they want.
