They were in two very different times. Andrew Martin is one guy who I think got lost in the shuffle of the changes in 'philosophies' in many ways. While you have guys like Austin, Rock, Cena, Punk, HBK and HHH who have natural charisma and strive in situations where they are not completely scripted. Test, I believe, was at least as good as Sheamus in the ring. However, he was a guy who would have benefitted from being scripted and rehearsed.

You're serious? Test got plenty of chances; if anything he was the epitome of a guy who got chances, because of his size. He was put in a McMahon angle, which is almost fool proof to get a guy over. Almost, of course, refers to Test. He was given Stacy Keibler, the hottest diva in the WWE, and couldn't get over. He was part of Team Canada, a gimmick guaranteed to get heel heat, and no one cared about him. He was pushed to the main event in ECW against Lashley, and no one wanted it. Test got so many chances, largely due to his size, and he always a guy with average at best ring skills, horrendous mic skills, and absolutely no charisma.
Test was just a guy. A wrestler in the midcard, Just mediocre

According to Vince Russo, the 1999 Test & Stephanie angle was his attempt to get Test over and would have peaked with him & Stephanie getting married - then Russo left for WCW, the angle got hijacked and was given to Triple H, solidifying his position in the WWF main event scene and leaving Test out in the cold.
Test was heavily criticized for his lack of personality and I remember him being referred to as "The Black Hole Of Charisma" by fans. He was good in-ring but he really needed a manager, which may be why his most memorable periods were when he had a woman in his corner (Stephanie, Trish Stratus, Stacy Keibler, ...). Sheamus has been pushed a lot and has several world title reigns under his belt already, but many fans think he's getting pushed mainly because he's friends with Triple H. |

thats an unfair comparison OP because Test IN HIS PRIME AND AT HIS PEAK pitted him against the top names of the Attitude Era at the height of WWF Attitude. This is also compounded by the fact that Sheamus had two brands and two titles to get while the WWF pretty much offered one main show and had about half a dozen behemoths of the industry vying for the top, Austin, Rock, HHH, Mankind, Kane, Undertaker, and then new arrivals like Big Show, Jericho, and Angle..
I always thought not in the WWF but in the overall industry that Test had the most obliterating kick i ever seen. It build anticipation in his matches with me. If he'd run down to the ring that would get me hyped if someone was about to get blind sided. I don't know how Sheamus turned face so easily but I guess children see him as a sort of leperchaun or something. People find his rough accent adorable or charming.. He was better as a heel and he would be a fine anti-hero too. Test wasnt even able to win the ECW brand title though. That hurts any defense of him. The Steph storyline was his main chance to transition but it didn't work out and it was high jacked by Trips who would take the limelight and he was unstoppable from 2001-3.. So Test got settled with domineering women and T&A then got released, then came back, then died.. T&A had nothing on DX and Trish had nothing on Chyna as a valet.. Test lost his footing and backslid horribly. Both had weak move sets and charisma but Sheamus is in a more flexible era. |
