Default Awake

Awake is a great new show that just recently started. If you have not checked it out yet, I highly recommend it. They show it on NBC on thursdays at 10:00 PM (eastern).

The show is about Michael Britten, played by Jason Isaacs, who is a detective that recently returned to work after an awful car accident that also involved his wife and son. Britten currently lives in two separate realities, one where his son Rex (played by Dylan Minnette) survived the crash and a second where his wife Hannah (played by Laura Allen) survived the crash. Each time he falls asleep he slips from the reality he was currently in, into the other one. You can differentiate which reality he is in by seeing if he wears a red or a green wristband.

Police detective Michael Britten (Jason Isaacs) is newly returned to work after being in a car crash along with his wife Hannah (Laura Allen) and his son Rex (Dylan Minnette). After the crash Britten discovers that every time he goes to sleep he switches between two realities, one in which his wife died in the crash and one in which his son died. To differentiate between the two realities, Britten wears different colored rubber bands in each reality: red, for the one in which his wife is alive, and green, for the one in which his son is alive. Scenes in the "red" reality use warm tones, while scenes in the "green" reality use cool ones.

Britten is unsure which reality is the real one and never truly feels "awake", hence the name of the show. He fears he is losing his sanity because details from the realities are starting to cross over into each other. He sees a different psychologist in each reality and works with a different partner in each as well. Details from one reality have helped him solve cases in the other. There is a little more to it than that, but I would rather not spoil anything.

So what are your thoughts on this show, do you like it? Why or why not?

If you haven't watched it yet, you need to. I really enjoy it so far. It's one of the best new shows I have seen in a long time and they have done an awesome job with the storyline. They keep you guessing as to which reality truly is the real one, and the way the two realities are intertwined is done extremely well in the writing of the plot too. I hope it sticks around for a while because it has loads of potential and too many shows get cancelled during their first season these days.

I am a major fan of this show, but the ending to episode 2 pissed me off to no end. You know and any viewer of the show knows what I'm talking about. The show was just fine as is, and it didn't need that sort of drama.

Actually, and I will respond to this without spoiling what happens in this scene, that was a great addition to the show's story. The best way for a show to keep viewers coming back for more each week is to make them wonder what will happen next. That scene created more conflict. It is a little early in the show to make a revelation as large as that one was, but shows need these types of moments due to the interest that it generates.

I would argue that Awake should keep going in the direction that the scene in question provided because it will keep viewers asking questions. Each episode needs some type of unanswered detail left out, or else people might not be as likely to watch again. The scene may have made you angry, but I guarantee it made you more likely to tune in to find out how it will be dealt with. The show is just amazing and could potentially join Dexter at the top of my list of favorite shows outside of wrestling.

I have watched all 3 episodes so far and they are still saved on my PVR. I've rewatched them each, as the moving back and forth between dreams can become confusing at times. I like the show so far. It is a very unique, original, and interesting concept. Well acted and deals with some very serious and complex issues. My GF asked me which one was a dream and which one was real, expecting that answer to be revealed right away. I told her that we're not supposed to know and one day we may find out. I do have to agree with the only post in this thread other than Dagger, that the ending of episode 2 was a bit of a turn off. I already had a good idea in my head after the 1st one which was a dream and which was real and the 2nd episode almost confirmed my belief. That to me is the major attention grabbing point of the show. Trying to figure out which is real and which is a dream (or the easy answer, they both are) They didn't completely destory that element, but now we've been added a new story to figure out. Who caused the accident in the first episode and why? The 3rd episode saved the show for me for at least another episode. Like I said... good show so far... but I hope they don't spoil the mystery too soon.
