Survivr Series 2001

Well this was an interesting event. It should have had a big time feel to it, but it didn’t. You would think the unification matches and the final battle for survival would have a lasting impression. In the end no one lost his job, the roster eventually split, and the titles were brought back. Therefore, Survivor Series 2001 is actually pretty forgettable to me.

I thought the opener was a decent match. Nothing special, just decent. I always liked Christian and I was glad to see him on the show. There’s nothing significant here. It’s just a way to remind people that because he’s a champion, Christian would still be around after the Alliance loss.

I’m not sure what the point is to Regal vs. Tajiri. It’s just kind of there. I don’t usually have a problem with that, but this show was supposed to be different. Each match was supposed to leave an impact on the future of the company. This just didn’t fit in.

Edge vs. Test was an ok match, but I have a problem with it. This event was ending the invasion angle. When I imagine an IC vs. US unification match this is hardly the match I dream of. Neither of these guys were ever even in WCW. I would think a unification match should at least have at least one guy with WCW roots. This is just one of many examples of how the invasion angle was fumbled.

What can I say about a battle royal? It’s a battle royal. A battle royal used to be a big match. Now it’s a way to get all the leftovers on a show.

Looking at the people involved in the women’s match you would think it could be pretty good. They were all trained wrestlers instead of diva contest winners. Too bad it was just a typical mess of a divas match.

I have a confession. After all my years as a wrestling fan I should have known better. I’m ashamed to admit it. I thought the Alliance had a chance in the main event. Not that I predicted them, but I thought they had a chance. There was only one reason for this thought. This was around the time the World Wildlife Fund was starting to force the WWF to change its name. I thought Vince might use this match as a way to do it. That’s the only reason I thought the Alliance may win this match. I thought the match itself was pretty good. Of course we knew it would come down to Rock vs. Austin, but that’s ok I guess.

The show itself wasn’t bad, but it failed to have the historical impact that it was supposed to. What really bothers me is what happened the next night. Out of nowhere everything that went down over the summer was supposed to be forgotten. All of a sudden Austin was the good guy again. He didn’t do anything to turn good. Vince was the bad guy. The fans were cheering for the WWF over the Alliance all summer. The WWF won and now the fans were cheering Austin over Vince again. Somehow Angle ended up as a bad guy by helping the good guys win. It was just a mess and made the whole angle pretty much pointless.

I know I’m way behind, but I’ll try to catch up before Survivor Series this Sunday. I’ve lost my posting momentum after being locked out for four days.
