Tiger Woods and Sergio Garcia have been "feuding" so to speak the last month or so. The feud turned ugly (or hilarious) with a comment made by Garcia last night. He was asked at a European Tour function if he would be inviting Woods to dinner during next month's U.S. Open. Sergio responded by saying:

Quote:

We'll have him 'round every night. We will serve fried chicken.

The comment made by Sergio was absolutely hilarious but can also be seen as racist. Tiger was none too pleased by the comment and Sergio has since apologized by saying he meant it in a joking manner. Here is a response from ESPN personality Michael Smith:

So what are your thoughts on the comments and the responses? Racist? Hilarious? Both?

Season 4 -...

Welcome to the MMA Prediction Contest Season Nine thread!

Champion History:
Season 1 - Yazloz
Season 2 - Fizzy
Season 3 - Fizzy
Season 4 - Crock
Season 5 - Turd Ferguson
Season 6 - Turd Ferguson
Season 7 - Turd Ferguson
Season 8 - Turd Ferguson

We will predict the main card for each card in this thread, and notable prelim fights. We'll keep it all in here, and be able to discuss the contest as it goes on. The winner of the "Season" will be the champion (the winner will have the most cumulative points.)

Also, don't be afraid to jump in each season in progress. Case in point: The Best scored zero on the first card we predicted, and he wound up being in second place going into the last card when it was all said and done. All it takes is nailing a couple of cards (or in his case, even one) to be "In the Mix".

Season Nine will have us predicting the following cards:

5/18 - UFC on FX - Belfort vs. Rockhold
5/25 - UFC 160- Velasquez vs. Bigfoot II
6/8 - UFC on Fuel - Nogueira vs. Werdum II
6/14 - WSOF 3 - Fitch vs. Burkman II
6/15 - UFC 161 - Barao vs. Wineland
6/19 - Bellator 96 - Chandler vs. Jansen
7/6 - UFC 162 - Silva vs. Weidman

Scoring will be as follows:

2 Points for predicting a correct winner
1 Point for predicting correct method of victory (T/KO, Submission, or Decision)
1 Point for predicting correct round (or decision).
Tiebreaker for guessing Fight of the Night/Submission of the Night/KO of the Night correctly (In which one additional point will be issued)
If you do not guess the winner correctly, you obviously do not get awarded any bonus points.

Example of a Correct Prediction:
Junior Dos Santos vs. Frank Mir: KO Round 2

Tallies are per event. Whoever has the most points at the end of the season is the champion. You can only edit your picks for only up to 10 minutes after they are made, and picks made after the deadline of WHENEVER THE PRELIMS START WILL NOT COUNT.

Please bold the name of your winner in order to make scoring these easier.

If you have any questions, please let me know... hopefully this is self-explanatory.

Roy Halladay: Hall of Famer?

Over the past decade Roy Halladay has been considered to be one of the best pitchers in baseball. Going back to last season and into this one it has been obvious that Halladay has not been the pitcher he used to be. Shoulder inflammation has recently forced him to the disabled list and there has been some talk that his career may be coming to an end. I have a feeling Doc will pitch again but what if he’s thrown his last pitch? If Halladay were to retire tomorrow would he end up in the Hall of Fame?

Over the next few years we will see some great pitchers go in the HOF. Greg Maddux, Tom Glavine, John Smoltz, and Randy Johnson are slam dunk first ballot hall of famers. Pedro Martinez will likely get in. Mike Mussina has a chance. Roger Clemens should already be in. When I think of Halladay I don’t put him quite on the same level as these great pitchers. Maybe I should. I’ve known for years how good Halladay is but for whatever reason I never gave much thought about him as a hall of famer. Maybe he’s not as good as some of the names I mentioned above but he doesn’t have to be to get in the hall. Jim Rice wasn’t as good as Hank Aaron but their both hall of famers.

The common definition of a hall of famer is someone that dominated their position during their career. Halladay has done that. Doc is an eight time all star. He has finished in the top five in Cy Young voting seven times, winning the award twice. He has also finished in the top five in earned run average seven times. His 67 complete games and 20 shutouts pale in comparison to pitchers from the past but during the days of pitch counts and specialized relief pitchers Halladay has been a modern day iron man when healthy. Unfortunately this isn’t the first time Halladay has dealt with injuries. After his first Cy Young season in 2003 Halladay went on to start only a combined 40 games over the next two seasons. Once healthy again during the second half of 2005 Doc picked up where he left off and had six more great seasons before starting to decline as injuries took their toll again last year. It would be nice if Halladay had complete 2004 and 2005 seasons to help his cause but injuries happen in this game and guys aren’t rewarded for what could have been.

I don’t want to make an excuse for Halladay but I think the standards by which pitchers are judged to get in the HOF need to change soon. The game is simply not the same as it once was. We will likely never see another 300 game winner. For as great as Halladay has been he only has 201 wins. Pitchers just aren’t given the opportunity to win as many games these days, and it’s not for lack of talent. The wins stat doesn’t carry nearly as much weight as it used to. So despite the not so impressive by HOF standards 201 wins (although more impressive when you consider he has only 104 losses) I think Halladay has done enough during his career to warrant induction. It’s a new era for pitching and Halladay could be the first of this new generation to open the doors to the hall for others that will have their wins taken away by pitch counts and specialty relievers.

I honestly could see three different answers here. I wouldn’t be surprised to see someone say he is an obvious hall of famer, the next guy say he’s borderline, and the next say no way. So what do you think? Pretend Doc announces his retirement tomorrow. Is he in Cooperstown in 2019?

The rise of Mark Hunt has been nothing short of extraordinary. Just to summarize everything:

After a court battle, the UFC had to still honor the PRIDE Contract of Mark Hunt.

They book him against Sean McCorkle, and he lost in a minute via armbar.

Despite losing, he still gets another fight against Brock Lesnar cloning experiment gone wrong Chris Tuchscherer and KOs him.

He goes on to fight Ben Rothwell. It was thought to be a foregone conclusion that he would get quickly submitted. Hunt toughs it out in a decision and nearly armbars him.

Hunt then KO's Kongo at Saitama Super Arena! However, he was then shelved for a year with injuries.

Hunt returns a year later and fights Stefan Struve. He breaks his Jaw.

Hunt then says he is ready to fight immediately afterwards. Alistair Overeem gets hurt and is pulled out of UFC 160 vs. Junior Dos Santos. A Rally for Mark Hunt led by the man himself is launched for him to replace Overeem, and he is successful.

If Hunt KO's Dos Santos, he's #1 Contender!

West

#1 Chicago vs #8 Minnesota - With Kane, Toews, Hossa, & Saad, it won’t matter who CHI’s goalie is as the Blackhawks will be too much for Backstrom & the Wild to handle. Blackhawks in 4.

#2 Anaheim vs #7 Detroit - Even though DET played well down the stretch just to get into in the playoffs, I think ANA’s offense will be enough to get past Kronwall, Ericsson, & the Wings D, but by the slimmest of margins. Zetterberg & Datsyuk should keep DET in the series, but it’ll be tough to do it against Hiller and/or Fasth enough times to advance into the next round. Ducks in 7.

#3 Vancouver vs #6 San Jose - While both teams match up well against each other, the trade for Derek Roy & Ryan Kesler’s return to the lineup is why I’m going with the Canucks, in spite of Niemi’s great play throughout the season. Also, we all know of SJ’s play in past postseasons lol. Canucks in 6.

#4 St. Louis vs #5 Los Angeles - Since the beginning of the 2011-12 season, the Kings have owned the Blues (took 3 out of 4 against STL in the regular season last year, swept them 4-0 in the 2nd round a year ago & swept them 3-0 in this year's regular season). Even though Elliott has been hot this past month or so, the Kings still have a better goalie in Quick & their offense is better with Carter, Kopitar, Brown, & Co. leading the way. Kings in 5.

East

#1 Pittsburgh vs #8 NY Islanders - No one knows the status of Sidney Crosby for this series, but even if he doesn’t play, the Penguins are deep enough to beat the Islanders without him. What I’m more concerned with is if Marc-Andre Fleury can overcome what happened to him in last year’s postseason. I think he will, & while Tavares won’t make it easy for him & PIT, the Penguins should advance into the next round. Penguins in 6.

#2 Montreal vs #7 Ottawa - With guys like Michalek, Anderson, & surprisingly Karlsson all back from their injuries, I think the Sens will pull off the upset here. While MON’s power-play has been one of the best in the NHL this season, OTT has been of the best teams at penalty killing. Also, I think Carey Price will struggle in this series which will too help lead to an early exit for the Habs. Senators in 7.

#3 Washington vs #6 NY Rangers - This should be the best series of the first round since these two teams will be playing each other for the 4th time in 5 years in the playoffs & because it’s pretty much a toss-up of who wins this series lol. While both teams are entering the postseason as two of the hottest teams in the NHL right now, & even though I trust Lundqvist more than I do Holtby; Ovechkin, Backstrom, Green, & WAS’s power-play will ultimately prevail & into Round 2. Capitals in 7.

#4 Boston vs #5 Toronto - Even with Kessel, Kadri, van Riemsdyk, & Lupul, I expect the Leafs to struggle to score in this series, especially on the PP, against Rask & the Bruins D. On the other side of it, the Bruins’ depth will overwhelm Reimer & perhaps even Scrivens. Bruins in 5.

My second round matchups are Chicago vs Los Angeles, Anaheim vs Vancouver, Pittsburgh vs Ottawa, & Washington vs Boston.

The story is in SI this week and it was just announced on Sportscenter. Collins is the first active male athlete in a team sport to announce that he's gay. He's 34 and played in two NBA Finals. Collins is a free agent at the moment but played this season with the Wizards.

Thoughts on this in general? Will it lead to more players from other sports? Will Collins be shunned? Will he be accepted?
