Rewatching it now. If the documentary actually continued through the whole history of Starrcade, it could sell the whole DVD with no matches.
It's a great doc. Starrcade is to this day my favorite PPV of any kind on any wrestling organization.

No, it could have been a great documentary. There's 50 minutes of great stuff on the first few shows and then the other 12 years, including the biggest match in the history of WCW, Sting vs. Hogan, gets a combined 5 minutes.

Blanchard and Magnum might be the best feud of all time. I'm watching just the documentary part of it and I'm getting fired up over it.
It was even better though when Hart and Austin stole the idea.

I'd definitely say that it's the best wrestling DVD in my collection. The intros definitely got cut short, almost as if they were tired of talking by the time they got to the top 10. Magnum and Blanchard should've been #1.

Amen. They just wanted a Flair match at #1. #2 should have been Hogan vs. Sting. The buildup for that carried it.

WCW messed up Starrcade so much for a little while. The Iron Man tournament still makes me scratch my head.
91 was the first PPV I ever remember getting. I loved it.

There were better Flair matches than what made #1. Hogan v. Sting had a great build-up, but the match underwhelmed me.

It did more than underwhelm. It killed the company. I have a post in Saving WCW about it that if you haven't seen might be worth checkingout.

I read it, but didn't reply because I was in the middle of a bitchfest about never watching current wrestling again. I think I may have even repped you for it.

You very well may have. I think I got like 9 reps for it, which it didn't deserve.

It was a great post. It deserved it. And, with the way wrestling has gone in the shitter lately, most people are nostalgic over the Monday Night Wars, and wish that we still had a WCW to compete with the WWE. I for one, have watched more ECW in the last month, than I think I may have ever watched when it was actually on TV.

ECW gets way more hate than it deserves and for one big reason: people still talk about it.

I'm the only one out of my circle of friends that still enjoys it, and I catch shit for it. I didn't think anyone on here would accept it, so I'm glad there's still a place for it.
I honestly feel like 15 votes for Lynn over HBK was a pretty sweet accomplishment. I just put on the Extreme Rules DVD also.

Here's why it's still a big deal: I didn't catch AWA or WCCW or CWA last night. I saw ECW though.
Piper vs. Hogan might be the worst idea of all time.

The WWECW? Or, real ECW? I get your point though.
Piper vs. Hogan might be the worst idea of all time.
The match itself wasn't bad. The whole angle of "You're not an icon" was BS. We all knew Hogan was bigger than Piper. All it did was drag Piper through the dirt. Didn't help that we had seen it 10 years earlier, at WrestleMania.

No, the match was REALLY bad. It wasn't even for the title. It's 15 minutes of old guys punching and botching.

It started OK at least :lmao: I'll admit is was mostly punches and kicks, but it fit for what the angle was. What else did you expect from them at that time?

I'll have to re-watch it then. I don't remember it being that awful, but it's been a while since I watched the first few matches on the DVD.

Oh god it's terrible. Piper beats him clean. What's the point of it not being for the title? I get that Piper couldn't be champion, but why put Hogan down and put Piper over in a non title on PPV?

You got me there. Only thing I could think of, is that Piper was just about done, and Hogan felt bad for him as a friend.

I may be wrong here, but I thought Bischoff didn't think Starrcade was the biggest. If it was "just another PPV" to him, then it's highly probable.

Which is odd as it wound up beign the biggest PPV of the year. Sting/Hogan, Goldberg going down, etc.

I think he realized he wasn't going anywhere without Starrcade being the biggest. Everyone makes mistakes.

Yeah that's true. Now we're onto Starrcade 89 and the Iron Man Tournament. This was another just out there idea that I'm not sure what they were thinking with. Muta vs. Sting is always a good combination though.

The matches I had seen of the tournament, seem to be pretty good. The idea killed some of them, because they couldn't wrestler their match. They had to do certain things.

The wrestling is ok, but the idea was just out there. As a gimmick show it would be fine, just not at Starrcade.
Muta using Cattle Mutilation-EPIC.

Not even that DVD could get me into Muta. I just don't see it.
Steamboat/Douglas vs. Pillman and Windham. THis is absolutely great stuff to say the least.
I loved that match. Even my son loved it.

I'm also a huge fan of Pillman and Douglas. Steamboat was great in anything, and Windham was at his best back then.

It's impressive when the worst guy there is Shane Douglas.

From what I remember, he didn't do too bad either. He obviously wasn't the highlight of the match, but he did his part. Seeing him as a face was a little startling at first, too.

When I was reading the match listings I was actually unsure who the faces were until I realized Steamboat was in it.

It definitely made it unique. I liked when ECW used it for PPVs as well. Most notable, when Bam Bam and Taz went flying through it.
